Creation

Creation

More than any other product, culture reflects the unity, value, and heritage of a people. Promoting cultural sectors creates social capital, strengthens identities, and fosters opportunities for exchange. The New Cotton Route aims to serve as a bridge between women farmers, craftswomen, weavers, dyers, fashion creators, designers, and innovators by building cultural and economic links between Canada and Mali along the thread of cotton, which we hope will bind the two countries even closer together.

This cross-perspective, carried by designers and fashion creators from Canada and Mali on the knowledge and know-how of traditional and modern textiles, will lead to co-creations rooted in cultural values, shared references, and lived experiences, expressed through creations of a subtle, reimagined contemporary style.

Fashion and interior decoration items will be designed using cotton materials cultivated, dyed, and woven by women. The low level of value creation in Mali’s textile sector results in a deficit in wealth creation, loss of income for stakeholders in the value chain, and the deterioration of the situation of women working in this field.
