The New Cotton Route within Cultural Diplomacy The New Cotton Route is part of the cultural diplomacy strategy of my embassy, the Embassy of the Republic of Mali in Canada, which we began developing in 2020. Maaya: Culture, Memories, References, and Creativity aims to contribute to the preservation and promotion of Mali’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage. “Maaya,” which symbolizes humanism in the Bambara language, seeks to highlight the cultural references that Mali shares with its communities and with the world. The initiative also aligns with the International Decade for People of African Descent, positioning itself as “a contribution to a better understanding of the general socio-economic conditions of Black populations in Canada” as well as in Mali.

A Hub for Cotton and Economic Exchange The New Cotton Route aims to serve as a hub for the production and commercialization of products born from the economic links and dynamics between cotton producers, artisans, micro-processors, fashion designers, promoters, and distributors.

This initiative symbolizes Mali’s cultural heritage in the field of textiles, especially those handcrafted by women farmers, artisans, fashion creators, and all stakeholders in the transformation and promotion of cotton. It focuses on sustainable development, creating long-term impact within communities through collaboration and mentorship with renowned Canadian and Québécois creators in fashion, design, and interior decoration, enabling access to international markets

The project showcases the creativity and talent of fashion creators, designers, artists, and artisans from Mali, Quebec, and Canada through cross-cultural perspectives on their cultures, knowledge, know-how, and ways of being. It will directly support artisans, fashion creators, and designers.

The initiative will also establish an innovation lab an intensive project of business planning, product testing, and mentorship sessions. Teams will work to validate and enrich ideas, elevate them to higher levels, and enable investors to make informed decisions in line with market demands.
